AEC has been active in Vietnam ever since 2000. Since then, 2,000 eye surgeries have been performed and more than USD 135,000 has been donated in the form of medicines, materials and instruments. In Vietnam, AEC collaborates with, inter alia, the Ministry of Health, the Choray hospital, ICCO/Implusis and the Dutch Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City.
• We train Vietnamese ophthalmologists and finance the training of ophthalmologists and surgery assistants in cataract surgery techniques such as phacoemulsification.
• New eye clinics are being set up in the province of Kien Giang, in the districts of Giong Rieng, Kien Luong, An Minh, Hon Dat, Vinh Thuan and An Bin.
• Since March 2008, after being invited to do so, AEC has extended the program to the province of Tay Ninh and 900 cataract surgeries have been performed by AEC teams together with Vietnamese colleagues, in hospitals in Tay Ninh, Go Dau and Tan Chau.
• In 2010 and 20111, AEC together with the Choray Hospital successfully organized in Ho Chi Minh City ophthalmic tranings on glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, phacoemulsification and pharmacotherapy. In these so-called 'AEC postgraduate seminars', more than 40 Vietnamese ophthalmologists from the Mekong delta participated.
