Myanmar

In 2008, AEC was one of the few foreign organizations to be invited by the Burmese government to provide eye care in Myanmar. In doing so, AEC collaborated with the Insein General Hospital, the North Okkalapa General Hospital, the Thingankyun General Hospital and the Yangon Eye Hospital. And also with Doctors without Borders-Holland.

In 2017, AEC expanded the ophthalmic collaboration to the Mandalay Eye and ENT Hospital, inter alia with a new postgraduate seminar.

Within the context of the AEC Collaborative Ophthalmic Training Program for Myanmar, AEC organized a postgraduate seminar for young trainee ophthalmologists in the Mandalay Eye and ENT Hospital from 8-16 March 2019. The seminar focused on epidemiology, macular degeneration and glaucoma. In these intensive ophthalmic trainings, 24 Burmese trainee ophthalmologists participated with much energy and enthusiasm.

In addition, AEC donated ophthalmic necessities, including an Alcon Infiniti phaco machine for cataract surgeries. So far, we have donated medicines, materials and instruments to the amount of US$ 216,000.

At the invitation of the Burmese government, AEC will continue the collaboration in 2020 with eye care, eye surgeries and ophthalmic trainings.
