In 2008, AEC was one of the few foreign organizations to receive permission to provide eye care in Myanmar. In doing so, AEC collaborated with the Insein General Hospital, the North Okkalapa General Hospital, the Thingankyun General Hospital and the Yangon Eye Hospital. And also with Doctors without Borders-Holland.

Within the context of the AEC Collaborative Ophthalmic Training Program for Myanmar, AEC organized a postgraduate seminar for young trainee ophthalmologists in the Yangon Eye Hospital from 22 September to 7 October 2017. At the invitation of the Burmese government, AEC extended the collaboration program in 2017 to the Mandalay Eye and ENT Hospital with a separate postgraduate seminar.

In Yangon, the seminar focused on cornea, medical retina and pharmacotherapy, and in Mandalay on uveitis, ophthalmogenetics and retinopathy. In these intensive ophthalmic trainings, 48 Burmese trainee ophthalmologists participated with much energy and enthusiasm.

In addition, AEC donated ophthalmic needs, including an Alcon Infiniti phaco machine for cataract surgeries.

At the invitation of the Burmese government, AEC will continue the collaboration in 2019 with eye care, eye surgery and ophthalmic trainings. So far, we have donated medicines, materials and instruments to the amount of US$ 201,000.
