Our patients: Saiyi (82), an end to her suffering

Ms. Saiyi is an 82 year old inhabitant of a village 40 kilometers from Pakse, in the Province of Champasak in the South of Laos.
Two years ago she gradually became blind in both of her eyes. How endlessly long her days were; not being able to do anything, to contribute to the family life. Helplessly sit and wait until a meal was served to her or someone came to have a chat with her. The boredom and dependence were a torture to Saiyi. When an ophthalmic nurse came to her village and examined Saiyi's eyes, she was referred to the Champasak Provincial Hospital in Pakse. Initially, Saiyi had little confidence in this; would Asian Eye Care really be able to cure her blindness? She decided to go after all and relied on the capable hands of the AEC team. The joy she felt when, after the surgery, she could see clearly again with one eye, is is indescribable. She enthusiastically explained how relieved she was to make herself useful again. To help the family at home and look after her grandchildren! Next year, Saiyi will place her trust in the AEC to treat the other eye.
